Ahmaud Arbery Prosecutor In Trouble With The Law

The tragic death of Ahmaud Arbery shocked the nation last year, but a new development in the case is raising even more questions.

Former District Attorney Jackie Johnson was indicted by a grand jury for for allegedly interfering on behalf of the suspects.

The former Georgia prosecutor has denied she did anything wrong.

“Our office is committed to ensuring those who are entrusted to serve are carrying out their duties ethically and honestly,” Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr said in a statement “While an indictment was returned today, our file is not closed, and we will continue to investigate in order to pursue justice.”

The office laid out the charges against Johnson:

  • Violation of Oath of Public Officer – This is a felony that carries 1-5 years.
  • Obstruction and Hindering a Law Enforcement Officer – This is a misdemeanor that carries up to 12 months.

Three men, William Bryan, Gregory McMichael, and his son Travis McMichael have been charged with murder in the death. As was caught on video, the men allegedly chased down Arbery in a pickup truck and killed him as he was running through their neighborhood.

“The Georgia Bureau of Investigation assisted in this investigation,” the state’s attorney general office said, adding that no further information about the investigation or about Jackie Johnson’s alleged crimes other than that stated in the indictment may be released at this time.”

The indictment lays out more details of the case:

On or about February 23 , 2020, said accused violated the above provision of her oath of District Attorney by showing favor and affection to Greg McMichael during the investigation into the shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery, thereby failing to discharge her duties as district attorney, to wit: said accused violated Article I, Section I, Paragraph XXX of the Georgia Constitution, a duty required by law, by failing to treat Ahmaud Arbery and his family fairly and with dignity when, after the shooting of Ahmaud Arbery, said accused sought the assistance of Waycross Judicial Circuit District Attorney George E. Barnhill and, after disqualifying her office, recommended DA Barnhill to the Attorney General ‘s Office for appointment as the case prosecutor without disclosing that said accused had previously soughtthe assistance of DA Barnhill on the case.
