Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez doesn’t seem to believe the increased crime rates in her home city of New York, calling the headlines a kind of “hysteria.”
Earlier this month, the New York Times reported in a story titled, “With Homicide Rates Rising, Cities Brace For A Violent Summer” that,
“homicide rates in large cities were up more than 30 percent on average last year, and up another 24 percent for the beginning of this year, according to criminologists.”
The democratic representative from New York stated in response that, “We are seeing these headlines about percentage increases…now, I want to say that any amount of harm is unacceptable and too much. But I also want to make sure that this hysteria, you know, that this doesn’t drive a hysteria and that we look at these numbers in context so that we can make responsible decisions about what to allocate in that context.”
She joined another Democrat representative from New York, Jamaal Boman, in a recent video cast to call for defunding the police.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been an outspoken critic of law enforcement who has repeatedly called for ‘defunding the police.’ Meanwhile, according to a new report, Rep. Bowman requested special police protection for his home in Yonkers, leading critics to question why he needs special protection while simultaneously calling for less police.
