Democratic socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is backing the Democrats’ proposal to expand the supreme court from 9 to 13 seats. It’s a move that would end the Conservative majority of justices.
“I do think we should be expanding the court,” she told Fox.
“The idea that nine people, that a nine-person court, can overturn laws that … hundreds and thousands of legislators, advocacy and policymakers drew consensus on … we have to … just ask ourselves, I think as a country, how much does that current structure benefit us? And I don’t think it does,” she said.
AOC justified her position by attacking the role of the Supreme Court in checking the constitutionality of the laws passed by Congress. The Supreme Court limits the power of the legislature, binding it to the Constitution.
