President Joe Biden attacked the Democrat-led states that have lifted their mask mandates, saying their decisions were “probably premature.”
“The science is saying now masks work, masks make a difference,” Biden told NBC’s Lester Holt. “I committed that I would follow the science, the science as put forward by the CDC and the federal people. I think it’s probably premature but it’s a tough call.”
The comments come after blue states around the country have lifted mask mandates, though many have kept those mandates in place for schools.
“As others noted, there is nothing in The Science™ that changed to justify Dem politicians suddenly ending mask mandates. All that changed is the political fear they have,” said Glenn Greenwald. “Conflating ‘The Science’ with politics like this is a key reason many lost trust in public health experts.”
Biden took criticism for the comments. Republican states have done well in the pandemic without the mandates. Dems have also taken fire for keeping kids masked, though they are the least at risk for serious harm from the virus.
“A photo of NY Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochul’s mask hypocrisy goes viral, so what does she do?” said Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel. “Lifts the mask mandate on herself, but keeps forcing masks on toddlers in schools.”
Others mocked the Democrats, saying they only changed their minds after Stacey Abrams was caught in a photo maskless with a room full of masked children.
“Good news. Dem governors decided it’s no longer in their political interest to abuse children with forced mask mandates,” said Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark. “At some point, even Joe Biden will get the memo. Thank you, Stacey Abrams!”
