Biden Takes Fire On All Sides Over ‘Botched’ Afghanistan Withdrawal

In recent days, we have seen Afghanistan collapse into shambles and criticism of President Joe Biden’s handling of the issue skyrocket.

The fall of Kabul and capture of the Kabul airport serves as a major challenge to the U.S. and raised questions around the world about our path forward.

The Pentagon attempted to help quell the violence, but failed with the recent overtaking and nearly 2,500 troops remaining on the ground. On top of that, Afghani locals, American citizens, and religious minorities in the country are now at risk of losing their lives.

“The Biden Administration’s botched exit from Afghanistan including the frantic evacuation of Americans and vulnerable Afghans from Kabul is a shameful failure of American leadership,” said Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. “The United States had the capacity to avoid this disaster.”

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo condemned Biden and lamented the situation.

“Every president confronts challenges. This president confronts a challenge in Afghanistan,” he said. “He has utterly failed to protect the American people in this challenge.”

To many, Biden’s challenge is clear: defend the lives of those that America fought so hard to protect for decades.

“Our enemies have been emboldened by Biden’s botched withdrawal,” said Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel.

Now, Biden is even taking pressure from even those in his own party

Tom Malinowski, D-N.J., affirmed Pompeo’s sentiments along with 36 of his fellow Republican and Democratic colleagues in a letter which sent to Biden Monday.

The letter “[urged] that he mobilize all available resources to evacuate Afghans who helped our troops, and others threatened by the Taliban, from Kabul. There is not a moment to be lost.”

Meanwhile, many Americans have renewed concerns about the Taliban and terrorist activity that had fallen into the background in recent years.

“Make no mistake, the Taliban’s newfound control in Afghanistan is a threat to our national security,” said Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C. “This is a failure on President Biden’s watch. We must ensure Americans and our allies in the region are safely evacuated.”
