Republicans on the House Oversight and Budget committees are attacking the Biden Administration new plan to offer Latin American countries piles of cash — in exchange for a commitment to offer better opportunities to their people. Republicans say it’s both naive and misguided and, and that the countries in question are some of the most notoriously corrupt in the world. The money, the GOP insists, will never make it to the people.
The plan reportedly involves sending cash payments directly to Central America to “combat the root causes of the migrant crisis” and has an estimated budget of $4 billion.
Reps. James Comer and Jason Smith, the ranking members on the House Oversight and Budget committees, wrote to Acting Office of Management and Budget Director Shalanda Young attacking a "conditional cash transfer program" to Central America, said to "address the root causes of the migration."
