President Joe Biden announced vaccine mandates Thursday promising Americans that “we will turn the tide on Covid-19.”
The President is using his authority to require tens of millions more workers to get vaccinated against the coronavirus. An estimated 80 million Americans have not received the vaccines. With the spread of the Delta variant, the country is facing a significant challenge. At present, an estimated 1,500 people per day are dying.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the leading voice on the crisis, is voicing his concern that we do not have the pandemic under control.
“The endgame is to suppress the virus,” he told Axios. “Right now, we’re still in pandemic mode, because we have 160,000 new infections a day. That’s not even modestly good control.”
On Thursday, President Biden expanded the vaccine mandate on federal employees to include more government contractors and remove the exceptions that allow workers to get weekly tests as part of their refusal to receive the vaccine.
In addition, he mandated that private businesses with more 100 employees must require employees to be vaccinated. If not vaccinated, the workers must take weekly tests to ensure that they are Covid free. Businesses that ignore the policy will face fines of up to $14,000 per violation. The administration believes its policy will impact two-thirds of the nation’s 80 million workers.
In his remarks from the White House, the President told those that have avoided that vaccine that, “We’ve been patient, but our patience is wearing thin. And, your refusal has cost us all.”
