One New York Democrat has helped propel his campaign by calling for defunding the police, but new reports indicate he is heavily reliant on New York police officers for his security detail.
Jumaane Williams is running for Governor of New York and has been an outspoken advocate for defunding the police but lives on an Army base and travels with a NYPD security detail, the New York Post reports.
This raises some questions about politicians’ security:
1) Should lower-level officials like public advocate/comptroller get taxpayer-funded security if they’re not at risk? (@JumaaneWilliams might be. IDK)
2) Is it appropriate for ones who readily criticize police to opt for it? https://t.co/KxeokbIHbw— Sally Goldenberg (@SallyGold) November 29, 2021
Democrats spent 2020 pushing for defunding the police in the wake of widespread riots across the nation’s cities. Though some have reframed their language to call for reorganizing police departments or diverting funds to social workers, others have stayed strong on the message. Others have called for abolishing police departments.
Meanwhile, Republicans around the country have taken the opportunity to rally around law enforcement.
“While other states defund their police, in Florida, we will always support our law enforcement,” said Gov. Ron DeSantis.
