Democrat leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi, as well as a growing number of lawmakers, are pressing for the removal of President Trump from office.
“What happened at the U.S. Capitol yesterday was an insurrection against the United Stated, incited by the president,” said Senator Schumer.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is also referring to the rioting on Wednesday a “failed insurrection.”
Schumer and House Speaker Pelosi are pushing for Vice President Pence to immediately invoke the 25th amendment and, according to Schumer, “If the Vice President and the cabinet refuse to stand up, Congress should reconvene to impeach the president.”
Lawmakers on both sides have stressed that Trump effectively provoked Wednesday’s actions and lawlessness at the Capitol and didn’t condemn the actions from his supporters strongly enough.
Meanwhile, Congress ratified the election for Joe Biden early Thursday. Though Trump said he would sanction an orderly transition of power, he nonetheless maintained that he “totally” disagreed with the outcome of the election.
Trump Allies Resign In Protest
The first member of Trump’s cabinet, transportation secretary Elaine Chao, resigned from her position Thursday in protest. She follows several other prominent resignations within the administration today.
