Rep. Cori Bush, D-Mo., has taken fire after news broke on Fox News that she surpassed $300K in funding for private security. Rep. Bush has taken criticism for her private security in the past and defended it.

“They would rather I die?” Rep. Bush said. “You would rather me die? Is that what you want to see? You want to see me die? You know, because that could be the alternative. So either I spent $70,000 on private security over the last few months, and I’m here standing now and able to speak, able to help save 11 million people from being evicted. Or – I could possibly have a death attempt on my life. And we’re also talking about the same exact people who say horrible things about me, who lie to build up their base. And then because they lie about me, I receive death threats. Now they don’t address the fact that I receive death threats after they go on air and say horrible things about me. But then they want to say, ‘Oh, but she wants, she needs private security.'”

Rep. Bush said those who don’t want her to have protection don’t care about her, even as she fights to remove protection from others.

“I have private security because my body is worth being on this planet right now,” she said. “I have private security because they, the white supremacist racist narrative that they drive into this country. The fact that they don’t care that this Black woman that has put her life on the line, they can’t match my energy first of all.”

News broke last year of Rep. Bush’s private security, and police have been adamant that funding is key to do their jobs.

“More policing is necessary to confront violent crime in larger and emerging cities. Community-based policing has been proven to reduce the homicide rate in NYC in the 1990s,” the National Police Support Fund said last year. “Defunding the police would lead to more chaos and increased crime in areas that are already seeing increases. Would require more police officers to work overtime. In some departments, this leads to decreased officer morale and increased burnout. Decreased budget means lack of training and resources- including de-escalation, use of force, and cultural awareness training.”

The news sparked controversy on Twitter.
