A steady string of Democrats have retired as poll numbers continue to show Americans favoring Republicans, and now reports indicate Democrats fear a red wave next November.
In fact, even CNN is reporting a red wave may be on the horizon.
What a difference four years makes in politics. At this point in 2017, Democrats were about to pull off a stunning Senate win against a very flawed opponent in the deeply red state of Alabama. It was one of many indications that Democrats were on their way to a big 2018 victory.
Today, everything is different. Pretty much every single indicator that pointed to a Democratic wave in the 2018 midterms now points to a Republican one in the 2022 midterms.
Meanwhile, Biden’s approval rating has hovered around 40% and Rasmussen reported Monday that only 31% of Americans believe the country is headed in the right direction.
Democrats lost big in Virginia earlier this year, which could be a sign of things to come.
“There is a reason so many smart Democrats are retiring. They know their days in the majority are coming to an end,” said National Republican Congressional Committee Spokesman Mike Berg.
Republicans are confident heading into next year, but whether it plays out according to plan remains to be seen.
“With Biden underwater and our data-driven grassroots infrastructure already hard at work, a red wave is coming in 2022,” said Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel. “Democrats have every reason to worry.”
