A third woman has come forward with allegations against New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) thereby increasing the likelihood that he may heed calls to step down from his position or at least have a very rocky political future ahead.
Anna Ruch, age 33, had never met the Governor until she attended a wedding reception that he was also at in September of 2019.
Ms. Ruch recounted her story to the New York Times. The report alleges that the governor was working the room, toasting the newlyweds, before stopping at Ms. Ruch. She thanked him for this kind words about her friends at which point he allegedly, “put his hand on her bare lower back.”
When she removed his hand with her own, the report says that Ms. Ruch remembers the governor remarking that she seemed ‘aggressive’ and then, he placed his hands on her cheeks. He asked if he could kiss her, ‘loudly enough for a friend standing nearby to hear.’ Ms. Ruch said she was bewildered by the entreaty and pulled away as the governor drew closer.
“I was so confused and shock and embarrassed,” said Ms Ruch, who’s recollection was corroborated by the friend, contemporaneous text messages, and photographs from the event. “I turned my head away and didn’t have words in that moments.
Ms Ruch’s accusations follows two accounts by former aides to Cuomo, alleging similar aggression. Both women accused him of sexual harassment in the workplace, which now threatens his third term. Meanwhile, Mr. Cuomo released a statement that only seemed to make things worse on Sunday evening by admitting that some things he has said “have been misinterpreted as an unwanted flirtation.”
In the case of Ms. Ruch, the incident did not occur with her employer. Nonetheless, the issue points to a pattern of behavior in which he allegedly seemed to make at least women –both of whom were multiple decades younger than him–feel deeply unsettled.
Some of the nation’s most prominent female politicians have remained silent. From Hillary Clinton to Kristin Gillibrand to Nancy Pelosi, all the woman that were activists in the #MeToo movement now seem to have very little to say about Cuomo.
AOC, to her credit, is calling for an independent investigation into Governor Cuomo’s indiscretions.
