A mysterious condition that is afflicting U.S. officials, spies, diplomats and their families around the world, is back in the news after Kamala Harris’s trip to Vietnam was delayed due to ‘Havana Syndrome’ earlier in the week. (Story continues below.)
Questions about the source of the attack remain but, some intel professionals would like to know whether or not China has played a role in the creation and use of this weaponry.
It is believed that China is not anxious for Vietnam to have a strong relationship with the Biden Administration. Local press in China even suggested that U.S. was hoping to cozy up to China’s South-East neighbors in an effort to alienate these countries from China itself.
As such, intel experts suggest the use of a sonic super secret Chinese weapon could have been intentional. Nonetheless, there is no evidence to yet suggest China is behind the attacks — at present no information surrounding the source of such attacks is available.
What is Havana Syndrome?
With Havana Syndrome, victims typically report hearing strange noises, including high pitched scratching sounds, followed by migraines, nausea, and a sensation of pressure. A loss of hearing, memory and balance is also typical.
Reportedly 100 CIA agents have been hit with the condition, which experts say could be a microwave or sonic weapon targeted at U.S. assets.
Some have called the syndrome, which has affected U.S. officials and intelligence sources around the world since 2016, part of a deliberate attack. The first reported cases appeared at the U.S. Embassy in Cuba in 2016, hence the name “Havana” syndrome. They have also been reported in China.
While we still have no answers on the exact source of the attacks, increasing intelligence experts are asking for the government to consider whether the syndrome could be part of a clandestine Chinese weapon program.
How It Affected Kamala Harris’ Travel
Havana syndrome resurfaced in the public eye recently when Vice President Kamala Harris’ overseas trip was delayed because of two U.S. officials coming down with the strange symptoms.
“Earlier this evening, the Vice President’s traveling delegation was delayed from departing Singapore because the Vice President’s office was made aware of a report of a recent possible anomalous health incident in Hanoi, Vietnam,” the U.S. embassy said. “After careful assessment, the decision was made to continue with the Vice President’s trip. The delegation will leave Singapore tonight and arrive in Hanoi, Vietnam.”
While we may not have all the answers on this phenomena yet, Americans want to get to the bottom of it and find out if China is really involved.
At present, it’s challenging to get answers. An investigation into the syndrome has been conducted, yet according to the New York Times, the government is refusing to release the details of the report.
Meanwhile, Congress is at least trying to help the injured with a bill to compensate victims and their families.
“I am pleased to see the Senate pass this important bipartisan legislation, which will provide the CIA director and the U.S. Secretary of State with the authorities needed to properly assist U.S. personnel who have endured attacks while serving our nation,” Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said after the legislation passed the Senate in June. “There is no doubt that the victims who have suffered brain injuries must be provided with adequate care and compensation. Further, it is critical that our government determine who is behind these attacks and that we respond.”
