President Joe Biden has taken more criticism than ever for the disastrous days in Afghanistan, but now one familiar voice (and critical) is weighing in.
Former President Donald Trump spoke up about the Afghanistan crisis, calling on the president to resign.
“What Joe Biden has done with Afghanistan is legendary. It will go down as one of the greatest defeats in American history,” said President Joe Biden. “It is time for Joe Biden to resign in disgrace. Afghanistan is the most embarrassing military outcome in the history of the United States. It didn’t have to be that way!”
Though some have pointed out Trump had also planned to withdraw troops, but critics have said Biden totally botched the handling of the withdrawal.
“Can anyone even imagine taking out our Military before evacuating civilians and others who have been good to our Country and who should be allowed to seek refuge?” Trump said in a statement. “In addition, these people left topflight and highly sophisticated equipment. Who can believe such incompetence? Under my Administration, all civilians and equipment would have been removed.”
The withdrawal has hit particularly hard for those involved in the war in Afghanistan. (story continues below.)
“I fought in Afghanistan,” said Rep. Mark Green, R-Tenn. “I lost friends in Afghanistan. We’ve seen this before in how Obama-Biden withdrew from Iraq in 2011. Same leadership. Same failure.”
Trump wasn’t the only one to criticize Biden. Those in both parties have raised questions about Biden’s decision, particularly the way he carried out the withdrawal.
“Make no mistake, the Taliban’s newfound control in Afghanistan is a threat to our national security,” said Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C. “This is a failure on President Biden’s watch. We must ensure Americans and our allies in the region are safely evacuated.”
Biden gave an address Monday on Afghanistan and said he does not regret his decision.
“I stand squarely behind my decision,” he said. “After 20 years I’ve learned the hard way there is never a good time to withdraw US Forces.”
