The House voted to provide a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children on Thursday. The vote passed 228-197 with nine Republicans voting with Democrats to pass the measure.
Dubbed ‘The American Dream and Promise Act,’ the proposal could impact an estimated 3.4 million people in the U.S. by providing a path to citizenship for ‘Dreamers’ as well as other people living in the U.S. with temporary protected status.
The House also passed ‘The Farm Workforce Modernization Act’ which would create a system for more than 1 million undocumented farm workers so that they could apply for legal status. That bill passed with a 247-174 vote. Thirty Republicans voted for the bill while a single Democrat, Rep Jared Golden (D-MA) voted against the bill.
Meanwhile, critics argue that a bill providing a pathway to citizenship may send the wrong signal to Latin and Central Americans by encouraging them to make the treacherous migration to the U.S.
The Biden Administration admits that the number of undocumented people crossing the border has reached a 20 year high though they say its Trump’s policies that have made the situation so challenging. Republicans, meanwhile, blame the Biden Administration for the “crisis.” GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said on the house floor that, “It is the Biden border crisis. So, far,” he said, “the Biden Administration and Congressional Democrats aren’t providing any solutions.”
Nearly 15,000 Children Being Held By Federal Government
9,542 unaccompanied children are currently being held in the Department of Health and Human Services facilities, and an additional estimated 4,500 are currently in Border Patrol custody.
The Biden Administration is refusing to call the situation a crisis and blames the current problem on Trump’s handling of the border, complaining that they were handed a system that was not ready for the rise in migrants.
Pelosi: DACA Kids “True, Legitimate Heirs of Fathers”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on the house floor as the vote came in that, “this legislation honors the truth that immigrants are the constant, reinvigoration of our country. When they come here with their hopes and dreams and aspirations…for a better future for their children…that courage, that determination, those aspirations, those are American traits and they all make America more American. Indeed, they are true and legitimate heirs, these Dreamers are, of our founders.”
