“We need to dramatically reform our democratic institutions. We have to end this filibuster, we have to ban gerrymandering,” said Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) referring to the use of filibuster in preventing Biden’s agenda getting through in congress.
“We have to make sure that we are removing substantial barriers for voting for low income communities and people of color. We have to end the dominance of unchecked corporate power in politics. There’s a lot of work that we can do.”
Omar also addressed the latest Senate Trial and the acquittal of former President Trump. She denounced Republicans for not voting to “even consider the charges against Trump,” despite what she called “full proof on display.”
“The decisions, sadly, that the Republican Party has made was a calculation based on power and violence being more valuable to them than protecting this democracy,” continued Omar. “What we saw in this week’s impeachment trial, where nearly every single Senate Republican voted to block even the consideration of charges against Trump, tells us everything that we need to know.”
