Israel Ministry of Health has been monitoring the usefulness of vaccines against coronavirus variants. On June 6th, they announced a decrease in vaccine benefit in infection prevention to 64% and in disease prevention with symptoms to 64%.
“The decline was observed simultaneously with the spread of the Variant Delta in Israel,” said Ministry of Health in a statement on Tuesday.
However the MoH says that they believe that “the benefit of vaccine in preventing hospitalization and severe morbidity in the coronavirus is estimated at 93%.”
According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC), Delta variant accounts for over 25% of the Covid-19 cases. The delta variant is likely to become dominant in the U.S. within weeks and is shown to be more infectious than previous variants. According to the CDC’s mapping tool, delta is currently most prolific in the central and western parts of the U.S. as of the two weeks ending June 19.
As of June more than 33.7 million coronavirus cases have been reported in the U.S., and more than 605,000 people have died, according to data from the Johns Hopkins University.
