“It would surprise Americans to see how a major Chinese company can so easily access government officials,” Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton told Fox News. “I would think the California legislature would be interested in how this happened.”
Judicial Watch has uncovered a trove of documents detailing how California’s Office of Emergency Services selected a Chinese company to make 300 million face masks for use during the Coronavirus pandemic. The Chinese company, called BYD (Build Your Dreams) is well known for making electric vehicles. It operates 30 industrial plants across the globe including in California. Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway owns a nearly 25% stake in BYD. The masks contracted by Newsom were produced in China.
As Fitton summarized from an April 7th 2020 email, the President of the Chinese company, BYD, suggested that the California agency “should open champagne at the conference call when California finalized the purchase of the masks.” In a later amendment to the agreement, “BYD had to refund 247 million of the 495 million down payment [to California] because they weren’t able to meet the deadline to receive certification for the N95 masks.
Newsom signed a second deal with BYD in July, this time for 400 million masks with a $316 million price tag.
