Major City Breaks Homicide Record

As violent crime spikes around the country, one city has set a new record for homicides.

Philadelphia has now surpassed 500 murders this year, ABC6 reports.

“It’s terrible to every morning to get up and have to go look at the numbers and then look at the news and see the stories. It’s just crazy. It’s just crazy and this needs to stop,” Mayor Jim Kenney told ABC6. “There are people making money selling these guns, making these guns, and the legislature, not the people behind me, don’t care. They don’t care how many people get killed. It’s ridiculous.”

Philadelphia is just one of several cities to violent crime after the wave of 2020 riots in the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder.

“After the city of Portland slashed its police budget by $12 million and eliminated three police units, the police withdrew while shootings climbed 173% and murders rose 255% in nine months,” the Law Enforcement Legal Defense group said. “Since June 2020, local leaders and activists’ increasing attacks, demoralized, debilitated, and in some cases, defunded law enforcement.”

Even President Joe Biden called for more police officers to be hired earlier this year to address the issue. He rolled out some federal measures to help address the issue.

“Whether Congress acts or not I’m going to use all the resources at my disposal to keep people safe from gun violence,” Biden said in April. “There is more Congress can do to help that effort. This is just the start.”
