Senator Mitch McConnell says he “absolutely” will support Donald Trump if he is the nominee of the Republican Party in 2024.
The comment comes just hours before the Conservative Political Action Committee’s annual conference in Orlando, Florida where former President Donald Trump is expected to take the to stage this weekend and effectively make himself the presumptive nominee.
A recent USA Today-Suffolk poll suggested nearly half of the Republican Party would defect to a new party should Trump decide to lead one, with 27% of those polled undecided.
Additional speakers at this year’s CPAC event include: Mike Pompeo, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley, Nikki Haley, Kristi Noem, and Ron DeSantis.
McConnell’s comments were made in an interview Thursday on Fox News. He told host Bret Baier that “there is a lot to happen between now and ’24. I’ve got at least four members that I think are running for president, plus some governors and others. There’s no incumbent. It should be a wide open race.”
