Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says he will not impeach President Joe Biden, sparking controversy within his own party.
McConnell’s comments come as more than two dozen lawmakers have called for Biden’s resignation.
“The president is not going to be removed from office,” McConnell said at an event in his home state of Kentucky.
“It’s official: President Biden has left Americans stranded at the hands of the Taliban,” said Rep. John Rutherford, R-Fla. “He now must resign immediately or face impeachment proceedings in the House. There WILL be accountability for his despicable actions!”Some have called for impeachment.”
Many have called for impeachment.
“I think he should be impeached,” Sen. Lindsey Graham told Newsmax in an interview. “I thinkI Joe Biden deserves to be impeached because he’s abandoned thousands of Afghans who fought with us and he’s going to abandon some American citizens because he capitulated to the Taliban to a 31 August deadline.”
Other leaders have called for either resignation or impeachment, as long as Biden is out of office.
“Should Biden step down or be removed for his handling of Afghanistan?” said former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley. “Yes. But that would leave us with Kamala Harris which would be ten times worse. God help us.”
Impeachment has become even more politically charged after Democrats’ focus on impeachment during the Trump administration. Republicans argue the former president was impeached for a lesser offense.
“If President Trump can be impeached over a phone call, then the time has come to IMPEACH Biden for gross negligence in Afghanistan,” said Rep. Ronny Jackson, R-Texas. “Americans deserve better. We deserve better than someone who willfully IGNORES the WORST crisis in decades.”
Some Republicans have also turned on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
“If Speaker Pelosi refuses to call the House back into Session so we can address Afghanistan and present the voice of the people on the House floor,” Rutherford said. “Then we need to recall the speaker with a vote of no confidence!”
