Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is demanding “actual consequences” for those who disclosed confidential tax information showing how billionaires are avoiding taxes.
“Actual consequences. As a matter of justice, and as a practical deterrent,” McConnell said in a Senate speech on Tuesday. “The federal government owes taxpayers nothing less.”
McConnell reaction comes days after ProPublica obtained a vast cache of IRS information showing how billionaires like Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk and Warren Buffett pay little in income tax compared to their massive wealth — sometimes, even nothing.
“American taxpayers are required by law to comply with invasive disclosure requirements, and they’re doing it with less and less confidence that the federal government will honor their trust,” said McConnell.
“Every time a leak goes without serious investigation and criminal prosecution, basic public trust in our tax system suffers,” he said.
