NBA ratings continue to crash–with ABC falling 45 percent since the 2011-12 season, while TNT was down 40 percent, and ESPN was off 20 percent. The news comes just as a recent poll conducted by Yahoo News/YouGov, found that 34.5 percent of respondents have watched less sports due to social justice campaigns.
The recent ratings crash follows the past two NBA finals which each dropped more than the other, down 51 percent last year to an all-time low. The worst performer was the final game, down nearly 70 percent year-to-year.
The average viewership for the league’s games stands at just 2.83 million.
The NBA’s collapse of viewership might reflect recent polls finding that basketball fans feel that the league has become far too political. In September, a Harris poll found that 39 percent of sports fans felt that the NBA had become too political, and 19 percent said that they had turned off pro basketball because of the NBA’s deep business links to China.
In 2020, the NBA started showing overt support for the “Black Lives Matter” movement.
However, NBC Commissioner Adam Silver stated that that practice would be discontinued, acknowledging the people who “just want to watch a basketball game”.
