According to a new poll, President Joe Biden’s approval rating has sunk to 43% – the lowest of his Presidency and, for the first time in his presidency, the majority of the country disapproves of the job he’s doing as president. According to Gallup, 53% of the country disapproves of Biden. Meanwhile, the President’s approval rating is down 6 points since August and 13 points since June.
The poll was conducted between Sept 1-17, following the President’s withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan. According to Gallup, the Taliban’s takeover of the country, along with the death of 13 U.S. service members by a suicide bomber at the Kabul airport, had a negative effect on the American public’s perception of Biden.
Biden’s approval rating is primarily split among party lines with 90% of Democrats still approving of the President (down from 98% when he took office) while just 6% of Republicans approve of the President. Independents, however, have turned on the President in recent weeks, with just 37% approving of his job in office thus far. Per Gallup, this is 24 points lower than the 61% approval rating he enjoyed earlier.
How Does Biden Compare With Trump’s Approval Rating?
While the President has not yet reached the approval rating low of the Donald Trump Presidency for his first eight months in office, he is getting quite close; Trump had an approval rating low of 37% — just five points below Biden’s current 43%.
According to Gallup, “Biden’s latest approval rating further cements that the honeymoon phase of his Presidency is behind him. Political independents, who were part of the coalition that helped him defeat Trump in 2020, now largely disapprove of the job he is doing as president.”
Gallup continued, writing, “Though Americans were generally supportive of the U.S. withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, the chaotic and deadly way in which it was executed has played into the decrease in Biden’s approval rating.”
Vice President Harris’s approval rating remains higher than Biden’s, at present, with 49% approving and 49% disapproving. Though she is doing slightly better than Biden (and is equal with his ratings in 2009) Kamala Harris is also underwater with independents.
