Poll: Majority Of Americans Not Confident In Biden’s Vetting Of Afghan Refugees

The latest polling shows that Americans do not trust President Joe Biden’s ability to vet the tens of thousands of Afghan refugees coming into the U.S.

The Pew Research Center released poll data this week showing Americans don’t have much confidence in the federal government – and the lack of faith is across party lines.

“Overall, about one-in-ten Americans say they are very confident that the government is conducting adequate security screening of refugees arriving in the U.S. from Afghanistan; 31% say they are somewhat confident, 27% say they are not too confident and 28% say they are not at all confident that the government is adequately screening refugees,” Pew said.

“Republicans are broadly skeptical of the job the government is doing: 54% say they are not at all confident that the U.S. government is conducting adequate security screening of refugees. This includes six-in-ten conservative Republicans. Moderate and liberal Republicans are slightly more confident in the screening process, though three-quarters say they are not too (33%) or not at all confident (42%) the government is providing adequate screening.”

Biden’s favorability is even worse when Americans are asked about his overall handling of the withdrawal. Convention of States Action found that roughly 70% of Americans disapprove of Biden’s job in that regard.

“There is absolutely no question that the American people are not buying the lies on Afghanistan. This is Saigon, and it’s far worse. Our nation has watched the same group of leaders in Washington DC flounder and blunder on foreign policy, on COVID-19, on the border, and on the economy,” said Mark Meckler, President of Convention of States Action. “After spending more than $1 trillion dollars and enduring wounded and dead soldiers, we are confronted with a basecamp for terror, a foreign policy nightmare, and are now less safe here at home. Time for new leadership.”

Several members of Congress have also criticized Biden for so far not labeling the Taliban a terrorist group, despite their clear connections to terrorism and violence in their leadership and recent history.

Several Senators sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken calling for Biden to change this policy.

“Since reestablishing control of Afghanistan, the Taliban resumed the same murderous and oppressive habits that characterized their leadership tenure prior to the arrival of U.S. forces in 2001,” the letter reads. “Even as the administration concluded the withdrawal of U.S. and allied forces from Afghanistan, we saw public attacks on individuals, beatings of women and girls, and search teams actively pursuing allies and partners. Most concerning to us is that among those beaten and chased by Taliban forces were American citizens and their families still living in Afghanistan.”
