Dozens of young White House staffers have been suspended, asked to resign, or placed in a remote work program allegedly due to their marijuana use.
According to a report in the Daily Beast, Biden staffers were led to believe that their recreational use of marijuana would be tolerated.
The publication reports that the Biden Administration required workers to disclose past marijuana use but told some new hires that they would overlook those who answered yes.
Yet, according to the Beast, there were a series of one-on-one calls allegedly made with staffers this month asking those who admitted to past marijuana use to resign or be placed in a remote work program. A former staff told the Beast that, “It’s exclusively targeting younger staff and staff who came from states where it was legal.”
A spokesperson for the Biden White House said that the number of affected staff is disputed and noted that the current White House’s approach to past marijuana use is much more flexible than previous administrations.
Shift of Policy?
Last month, NBC reported that the White House intended to waive the requirement that all potential appointees in the Executive Office of the President be able to obtain a top secret clearance. Marijuana use, officials explained to NBC, was okay so long as past use was “limited” and the candidate was not seeking a position that required a security clearance.
Kamala Harris Admitted She Smoked Marijuana
In an interview on the New York based radio show “The Breakfast Club” back in February 2019, then Senator Kamala Harris was asked if she had smoked marijuana.
“I have,” she told the host. “And, I inhaled — I did inhale. It was a long time ago. But, yes.”
