Rand Paul On COVID Mandates, Lockdowns: ‘Simply Say No’

The fight over vaccine passports, mask mandates, and other COVID restrictions is at a fever pitch–and one of the strongest Republican opponents of the government restrictions is laying down the law, as he see it.

Sen. Rand Paul, who is a doctor and a libertarian on most issues, blasted government for what he believes is overreach in a new video posted to Twitter.

“We don’t have to accept the mandates, lockdowns and harmful policies of the petty tyrants and bureaucrats,” he said. “We can simply say: ‘No, not again.'”

Sen. Paul also criticized the Biden administration, which has mandated vaccines for federal employees.

“No one should follow the CDC’s anti-science mask mandates,” he said. “And if you want to shut down federal agencies again, some of which aren’t even back to work yet, I will stop every bill coming through the Senate with an amendment to cut their funding if they don’t come back to work in person.”

In addition, Sen. Paul also took issue with Democrats’ school COVID mandates.

“Children are not at any more risk from COVID than they are from the seasonal flu,” he said. “If a school system attempts to keep children from full-time, in-person school, I will hold up every bill with two amendments. One to defund them, and another to allow parents the choice of where the money goes for their child’s education. Do I sound fed up to you? That’s because I am.”

Sen. Paul has also got help from others in the Senate. Sen. Paul and colleagues introduced a bill last month to ban mask mandates on public transportation.

“Mask mandates have outlived their usefulness, yet they remain in effect on flights and other modes of public transportation. This policy discourages family travel and forces Americans with children—especially those with disabilities—to cancel travel or else live in fear that an untimely tantrum or bad day could ruin their trip and cost them more than a thousand dollars in fines,” Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., said in mid-July. “Our bill will put an end to this unscientific and punitive practice.

Nonetheless, there are mounting concerns surrounding increasing infection rates as states with low vaccine rates continue to suffer. Fears about a new variant, meanwhile, have lawmakers and the federal government on high alert. The Biden administration has pointed to a spike in cases of the delta variant, which is reportedly far more transmissible than the COVID strain that led to widespread infections and shutdowns beginning last year.
