Republican Senators are piling on the liberal media after more information has lended credibility to theories that COVID began in the Wuhan lab, an idea that was previously mocked by the media as a conspiracy theory.
Senators Tom Cotton, R-Ark., and Ted Cruz, R-Texas, lambasted the Washington Post for their mocking of Republicans. WaPo has heavily criticized Republicans for months for pursuing the idea that COVID may have come from a lab in Wuhan, but this week they released a new story headlined, “Timeline: How the Wuhan lab-leak theory suddenly became credible.”
Sen. Cruz jumped on the opportunity, calling them “clowns.”
WaPo has accused Sen. Cotton of repeating a “debunked” theory and the New York Times called it a “fringe conspiracy theory.” But Sen. Cotton fired back Tuesday.
“One lesson for the media is that self-interested denials from the Chinese Communist Party do not equal ‘debunking,'” he wrote on Twitter.
Sen. Cotton has also raised questions about federal funding of the Wuhan lab. The Republican pushback comes after Sen. Cotton and other Republicans in the Senate sent a letter to the NIH demanding answers on this issue.
“Dr. Fauci has been to Congress, and he said this absolutely did not happen, but Dr. Fauci is playing word games,” Cotton told Fox News Sunday. “So, the money that the NIH gave went to an American organization, which turned around and gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to these Wuhan labs to investigate coronaviruses and, yes, to find ways to make them more contagious and more dangerous.”
Overall, Sen. Cotton said understanding the root cause of the pandemic will help America avoid the next one.
“If we want closure in the aftermath of this pandemic—and if we want to avert the next one—we must learn about its origin,” Sen. Cotton said. “That means we must look at the lab in Wuhan and the experimental research its scientists performed. Isn’t it strange that this once-in-a-century bat coronavirus pandemic just happened to emerge within a few miles of China’s biggest laboratory researching bat coronaviruses? Shouldn’t we at least look at that lab?”
