Texas Governor Greg Abbott grabbed headlines for his announcement that his state would build its own border wall, whether the Biden administration liked it or not.
Now, though, he is demanding the federal government give Texas back its land so the construction can begin.
Abbott sent a letter to the Biden administration telling Biden to return the property.
“The federal government used condemnation powers to take property from Texans for the purpose of building a border wall,” the letter reads. “Once you took office, however, your Administration made clear the federal government will not move forward with building the border wall at this time. I write now to demand that you immediately return to Texans any land taken by the federal government but not used for building a border wall.”
Abbott points out that local Texas residents have had to take matters into their own hands.
“As we speak, there are state agencies talking to landowners on the border about putting up fencing on their private land to be able to prevent the dramatic influx that these landowners have been suffering from over the past few months.
That is likely why Abbott’s announcement has been met with so much praise from his fellow Texans, and many others around the country.
“While securing the border is the federal government’s responsibility, Texas will not sit idly by as this crisis grows. The state is working collaboratively with communities impacted by the crisis to arrest and detain individuals coming into Texas illegally. Our efforts will only be effective if we work together to secure the border, make criminal arrests, protect landowners, rid our communities of dangerous drugs, and provide Texans with the support they need and deserve. This is an unprecedented crisis, and Texas is responding with the most robust and comprehensive border plan the nation has ever seen.”
