Even as the Biden administration promises to expel the thousands of Haitian immigrants gathered in Del Rio, Texas, media reports indicate that the migrants are being released into United States in droves.
In a new report, the Associated Press cited two unnamed U.S. officials who told the news organization that Haitian migrants camped in Del Rio, Texas are being released in the United States on a large scale.
According to the AP, the immigrants have been told to appear at an immigration court in 60 days’ time under ‘catch and release.’ Others, meanwhile, are reportedly being sent on buses and planes to other parts of the U.S. to be processed by border agents there.
These allegations have been echoed by others included by the ICE Buffalo Field Office Director Tom Feeley who told Fox “It’s happening on a grand scale.”
According to Feely, the direction to release the migrants into the country is deliberate. “They’re getting pounded every day fielding calls from headquarters about who they can release to make room for more people on the border. And the following week, they’re getting more calls almost daily, again, about who can you release to make room for more people on the border,” he alleged. “So basically all we’re doing is we’re catching them at the border, shipping them into the interior, releasing them and getting more and then releasing them and then getting more and releasing them.”
The number of migrants possibly being released is unclear. Texas Governor Greg Abbott aid that nearly 8,600 migrants were still in Del Rio as of Tuesday afternoon.
An estimated nearly 15,000 migrants had been gathered under a bridge just over the border with Mexico.
The allegations of release come as a new poll from Rasmussen found that 52% of Americans rate Biden as “poor” on immigration.
According to the national telephone and online survey, “just 13% of likely U.S. Voters rate Biden as excellent on his handling of issues related to immigration,” the group said. “Another 17% rate his handling of immigration as good and 15% say Biden is doing a fair job on immigration. However, 52% rate Biden’s handling of immigration issues as poor. Biden’s ratings on immigration have worsened since April, when 50% of voters rated his handling of immigration as poor.”
Meanwhile, a new Gallup poll release Wednesday, shows that for the first time the majority of Americans disapprove of President Biden’s job in office. His approval rating has sunk to a record low of just 43%.
DHS, for its part, has officially been warning migrants not to make the journey to the U.S.
“If you come to the United States illegally, you will be returned, your journey will not succeed, and you will be endangering your life and your family’s life,” Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. “Your journey will not succeed, and you will be endangering your life and your family’s lives.”
