Podcast host and UFC commentator Joe Rogan has gone viral for a series of tough questions of CNN’s resident health expert, Dr. Sanjay Gupta.
The interview hit maybe its most intense moment when Rogan pressed Gupta on why CNN called the drug ivermectin horse dewormer. The drug has been approved for human consumption and was taken by Rogan during his recent battle with COVID.
“By the way, I’m glad you’re better,” Gupta said.
“Thank you,” Rogan said. “You’re probably the only one at CNN who’s glad…the rest of them are all lying about me taking horse medication.”
“That bothered you,” Gupta responded.
“It should bother you too,” Rogan said. “They’re lying at your network about people taking human drugs versus drugs for veterinary.”
“Calling it a ‘horse dewormer’ is not the most flattering thing,” Gupta said. “I get that.”
“It’s a lie…and it’s a lie that they’re conscious of,” Rogan said. “It’s not a mistake. They’re unfavorably framing it as veterinary medicine.”
As the conversation went on, Rogan continued to press Gupta.
“Why would they lie and say that’s horse dewormer? I can afford people medicine…It’s ridiculous! It’s just a lie! Don’t you think that a lie like that is dangerous on a news network when you know that they know they’re lying?”
Then he added a zinger.
“Do you think that that’s a problem that your news network lies?”
Gupta admitted CNN made a mistake but dodged questions about CNN’s wrongdoing beyond that. The video is uncomfortable as Gupta refuses to directly answer but Rogan continues to press.
After the incident, Gupta was quick to post an article on CNN explaining the interview. Gupta, however, did not really address Rogan’s allegations about the network lying.
“I guess a small part of me thought I might change Joe Rogan’s mind about vaccines,” Gupta wrote. “After this last exchange, I realized it was probably futile. His mind was made up, and there would always be plenty of misinformation out there neatly packaged to support his convictions. Truth is though, I am still glad I did it. My three-hour-long conversation wasn’t just with Rogan. If just a few of his listeners were convinced, it will have been well worth it.”
